Important in Medicine because…

  • Christian Barnard completed the first Heart Transplant on 3rd December 1967. The patient survived only 18 days.

  • Poor life expectancy ceased the process until proper anti-rejection or immunosuppressant drugs were properly developed.

  • However this represents a massive turning point in modern surgery. It meant in theory that if you had a faulty organ, it could be replaced with a new one.
